Individual Quarter-finals Confirmed
BISFed 2019 Hong Kong Boccia World Open pool events concluded today (16 May), the quarter-finals line-ups confirmed after 2 days of matches.
BC1 player Leung Mei Yee finished second in pool C with 2-1 win-loss record and will face off Chew Wei Lun from Malaysia in quarter-finals. Great Britain’s David Smith finished second as well and clinched a spot in the knockout stage with 3-1 win-loss record. His strong opponent Natthawut Deemak from Thailand went unbeaten in the pool plays and advanced with top spot.
Yeung Hiu Lam ranked the second in pool D and secured a spot in the BC2 quarter-finals after overcoming her compatriot John Loung and Malaysian player with greater goal difference. She will match up with Hidetaka SUGIMURA from Japan. World top players Worawut Saengampa and Watcharaphon Vongsa from Thailand topped their pools with unbeaten winning record.
Ho Yuen Kei was in good form in BC3 Individual pool events and won all her group matches and will meet Australia’s Spencer Cotie to compete for a slot for semi-finals. Greece’s Grigorios Polychronidis sealed qualification to quarter-finals after a 1-point narrow win over Russia opponent.
Leung Yuk Wing, in his last group match, trailed 0-1 in the first end and was able to turn the tables in last end 3-1 and made his three consecutive win in BC4 pool matches. He will compete with Brazilian player Eliseu dos Santos in quarter-finals. Lau Wai Yan Vivian, the second placed home player in Pool B advanced to face China’s player Guang Yuexiang in knockout round. Surprisingly, another Chinese player, last year’s World Champion Zheng Yuansen was crashed out of the pool with 1-2 win-loss record.
The knockout rounds and medal round matches will take place tomorrow (17 May). Public are welcome to watch the matches for free and support Hong Kong team at Ma On Shan Sports Centre.
